Today we're extracting and purifying microplastics from my local lake using Olive Oil! This is part of the #TeamSeas campaign, to raise awareness around the issues of plastic in our oceans, beaches and rivers. All adsense revenue from this video will be donated to #TeamSeas, and you can donate directly at https://teamseas.org/ CONSIDER SUBSCRIBING 🥰 🔬Patreon if that's your jam: https://www.patreon.com/breakingtaps ☕Buy me a coffee? https://www.buymeacoffee.com/Breakingtaps 📢Twitter: https://twitter.com/BreakingTaps 💻Discord: https://discord.gg/R45uCXcEv4 ==== Details ==== There are multiple ways to extract microplastics for analysis, mostly using density separation. I tried a technique called Oil Extraction Process. Because most plastics are Oleophilic ("oil-loving"), a mixture of oil and water will separate plastic into the oil phase. Everything else will settle into the water phase, allowing you to collect the microplastics for futher study. I collected sediment from my local lake (Lake Champlain) and ran it through the OEP, with varying levels of success. I eventually got a good sample and was able to image it on the Scanning Electron Microscope. It's hard to know if any individual piece is a microplastic, but we can use morphology and EDS clues to help decide. ==== Oil Extraction Process citations ==== - Coppock, R.
